Université de Monastir, TunisiaThe University of Monastir (UM) is a public higher education institute. It was founded in 2004 (Decree n° 2102, 2 September 2004). Its main activities is related to higher education, learning and research in a very broad sense. It comprises 10 institutes and 6 faculties. With around 27500 students, 2044 lecturers 758 administrative and support staff, the University of Monastir offers a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level being the average number of the graduates approximately 4700 per year.

The fields which characterize the University of Monastir and constitute its domains of excellence are: Exact and engineering sciences on the one hand and biological, biotechnology and medical sciences on other hand. Among the degree programmes offered by faculties, institutes or combinations thereof are Biology, Biotechnology Applied Mathematics and Informatics, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Clinical Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Studies.

The University of Monastir is a very distinguished institution of Higher Education in the field of Pharmaceutical Studies and Dental Surgery and also in Design and Fashion. The distribution of students among these subjects during the academic year 2010/2011is as follows: Clinical and Pharmaceutical Studies (4895 students), Engineering (4109 students), Computing and Communication (3888 students) and Fundamental Sciences (3774 students).

The University of Monastir began to adapt its course offerings to the LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorat) system in the academic year 2005/2006 (except for Medical and Engineering Studies). It is also the principal center of academic research in the region (Sahel). Its research policy is defined and implemented by the Vice-President for Research. More than 950 doctoral students perform research activities at the University of Monastir mainly in the fields of Biological and Medical Sciences and Engineering and Exact Sciences. Its more than 50 research units and 25 laboratories carry out high quality research under the supervision of four doctoral schools. The University of Monastir is a member of international networks and associations such as the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and it is involved in a vast number of national and international projects financed through different program such as CMCU, INSERM, TEMPUS, INTERREG, etc.
